Information about BELARUS Since its birth as an independent state in 1991, Belarus has strived to revive its culture and heritage whilst moving forward economically. The Belarusian terrain was largely flattened by glacial scouring, however this country is living proof that landscape doesn’t have to be spectacular to be enchanting and beautiful. Nature lovers should visit the Belavezhskaja Pushcha Nature Reserve, on the western border with Poland. It's the largest area of ancient forest in Europe and has substantial herds of the once near-extinct European bison. If you've got your own car, the Blue Lakes area in the north of Belarus is renowned for its natural beauty, and is a popular camping and hiking area. The country's network of 11,000 lakes and numerous streams make for great fishing. The Belarusians love mushrooms, and gathering them from the fields is something of a local ritual. A striking sight in Spring are the great fields of the delicate blue flower of the flax plant (the raw material for linen). The capital, Minsk, is a surprising successful example of Soviet planning. The city was rebuilt after 1944 and today it is bright and clean in comparison to other cities in the region. Strongly literate, Belarusian bibles were some of the first books to be printed in Eastern Europe. The Festival of Poetry, held on Lake Svityaz in June, celebrates the work of great Belarusian and Russian poets. Minsk hosts the Expolingua international language festival in April. The country also has a strong musical tradition and composers gather in Minsk in January to discuss music and host a series of concerts during the National Convention of Belarusian Composers. The Belarusian Musical Autumn, held in Minsk in the last 10 days of November, is a festival of folk and classical music and dance. Belarus' economy has recently posted reasonably strong growth and is expected to continue expanding in the immediate future. While it relies heavily on Russia for trade, there is a growing desire for stronger ties with its Western neighbours.
